Why this step matters

Remapping increases the demands placed on an engine’s fuelling, boost and cooling systems. Most of the time this is well within a healthy engine’s capability — but an existing fault can turn a routine remap into a problem, or simply hide a fault that gets worse under the new map.

That’s why a quick health check comes as standard before we start any remap — it protects your car and makes sure the finished result is as good as it should be.

Warning signs worth flagging before you book

If any of the following sound familiar, mention them when you book so we can look closer during the health check:

  • Engine management light on, even intermittently
  • Hesitation, misfires or rough idle
  • Whistling, hissing or fluttering noises from the turbo or intercooler pipework
  • DPF or emissions warning lights (diesels)
  • Noticeable loss of power compared to how the car normally feels
  • Recent oil leaks, coolant loss, or overheating

What we check before tuning

A quick scan for stored and pending fault codes, a visual check of boost pipework and intercooler for leaks or perishing, fluid levels and condition, and a look at service history where available. On diesels, we’ll also check DPF condition since this affects how a remap should be approached.

Bottom line: most cars pass this check without any issues — it’s a quick, sensible step rather than a barrier to booking.
