What AdBlue and the SCR system actually do
AdBlue is a urea-based fluid injected into the exhaust ahead of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst, where it breaks down NOx emissions into nitrogen and water vapour. It's a legal requirement on the vast majority of diesels built to Euro 6 standard, and the system is designed to be impossible to ignore — the ECU is required by law to prevent the engine restarting if the system stops working correctly.
That's the part that catches drivers out: the countdown-to-no-start isn't a fault or a bug, it's the system doing exactly what it's legally designed to do.
Why the warning appears
The obvious cause is a low or empty AdBlue tank, and that's genuinely the most common reason for the warning — a straightforward top-up with the correct fluid resolves it in seconds. But the same warning light and countdown can appear for reasons that have nothing to do with tank level:
- A failing NOx sensor giving the ECU an incorrect reading
- A blocked, frozen, or failing AdBlue injector
- A faulty level or quality sensor reporting the tank as low or contaminated when it isn't
- A failed heating element, which matters because AdBlue freezes at around −11°C and the tank needs to be kept warm in cold weather
- Water or foreign contamination in the AdBlue tank itself
Topping up the fluid won't fix any of these — the warning will simply return, sometimes within a single journey.
What we actually check
We read the fault codes and live SCR data first — NOx sensor readings, injector operation, tank level and quality sensor output, and heater status — rather than assuming it's simply low fluid. That tells us whether a top-up is genuinely all that's needed, or whether a sensor, injector, or wiring fault is the real cause.
