What the EGR valve is actually doing
The exhaust gas recirculation valve routes a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the intake, lowering combustion temperature and reducing NOx emissions. It's fitted to the vast majority of diesels and many turbocharged petrols built in the last two decades, and it's opened and closed constantly by the ECU depending on engine load, temperature, and speed.
It's a simple idea, but the valve sits directly in the path of hot, dirty exhaust gas — which is exactly why it's one of the parts most likely to give trouble over the life of the car.
Symptoms of a failing EGR valve
An EGR fault can show up in several different ways depending on whether the valve is stuck open, stuck shut, or just responding slowly:
- Rough or lumpy idle, especially just after starting
- Hesitation or flat spots under light acceleration
- An engine management light with an EGR-related fault code stored
- Limp mode or a noticeable loss of power
- A smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin, or increased fuel consumption
- Failure of the NOx or emissions portion of an MOT test
Because these symptoms overlap with several other faults — a boost leak, a DPF issue, a sensor fault — guessing at the cause rarely ends well. It needs to be read from live data, not assumed.
Why EGR valves fail
The most common cause is carbon build-up. Soot and oil vapour from the exhaust and crankcase ventilation system coat the valve and the passage around it over time, until the valve either can't move freely or can't seal properly when closed. Beyond fouling, the electric or vacuum actuator that moves the valve can fail outright, and the wiring or position sensor feeding the ECU can develop faults of its own.
What we actually check
We read the fault codes and live actuator data first, rather than pulling the valve straight off the car. That tells us whether the valve itself is mechanically stuck, whether the actuator or wiring has failed, or whether the EGR system is reacting correctly to a fault somewhere else — a boost or MAF sensor issue, for example, can make a perfectly healthy EGR valve behave incorrectly.

- Related sensors that could be causing, not just accompanying, the fault
