The two lines: power and torque

Most dyno graphs show two curves against engine RPM along the bottom axis: power (usually in BHP) and torque (usually in Nm or lb-ft), each on their own vertical axis. Power generally rises with RPM and peaks nearer the top of the rev range; torque typically peaks lower down and holds across a plateau on turbocharged engines.

Why the shape matters more than the peak number

A single peak figure only tells you the very top of what the engine can do at one specific RPM. The shape of the curve underneath tells you how the car actually feels to drive — a broad, flat torque curve gives strong pull across a wide range of revs, which matters more day-to-day than a spike right at the redline.

Look for: a smooth curve without sudden dips. A dip or flat spot partway through the rev range can point to a fuelling issue, boost leak, or restrictive part of the intake or exhaust.

Comparing before and after correctly

Your before/after graph should be run on the same dyno, same day, ideally back-to-back, so temperature and conditions are consistent. That’s the only way the comparison is genuinely apples-to-apples rather than skewed by outside factors.
