What actually makes a car a good candidate
It comes down to how much margin the manufacturer left in the factory calibration. Turbocharged engines respond best, since a remap can adjust boost pressure alongside fuelling and timing — and diesels in particular are often calibrated conservatively for durability and emissions compliance across a wide range of markets, leaving genuine room to work with.
Shared engines detuned for a lower trim, or an engine sold in the same state of tune across several different models, also tend to have more headroom than a manufacturer's flagship performance variant, which is often already close to its practical limit from the factory.
